Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Wednesday presided over a formal ceremony marking the transfer of command of the Somali National Army (SNA) to Major General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, who assumes office as the new Chief of Staff, succeeding Lieutenant General Odawaa Yusuf Rage.
Addressing senior military officials, government representatives, and invited guests at the handover event, Prime Minister Barre congratulated Major General Ibrahim on his appointment and called on him to lead the armed forces with the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and ethical conduct. He stressed that strong leadership within the army is essential not only for battlefield success, but also for setting a positive example for the wider society.
The Prime Minister commended the Somali National Army for what he described as “notable achievements” in the ongoing campaign against extremist groups, saying government forces, in coordination with local allies, have liberated many territories that were previously under militant control and dismantled several key strongholds.
“Our goal is clear: to eliminate Al-Shabaab entirely from Somalia in the near future,” Barre said, adding that the group had previously occupied vast and resource-rich areas, including fertile agricultural zones and strategic river valleys, with the intention of crippling national production and economic growth.
Barre emphasized that defending Somalia’s sovereignty and protecting its national flag represents a sacred duty for the armed forces. He noted that sustainable development and national progress would remain impossible unless the country’s territory is fully freed from extremist influence.
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving the welfare, rights, and living conditions of soldiers, explaining that a substantial share of the national budget is allocated to security institutions to enhance their operational capacity and ensure the safety of the population.
In his remarks, Barre expressed gratitude to the outgoing Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Odawaa Yusuf Rage, for his years of service and contributions to rebuilding the army. He urged the new Chief to build on these efforts and continue strengthening the Somali National Army into a capable, unified, and professional force capable of defending the nation and preserving long-term stability.
