Somalia government on Sunday blocked entry of armed personnel and weapons into Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, ahead of the national dialogue, citing public safety and security.
The government turned back aircrafts carrying the heavily armed forces linked to the security details of Said Dani and Ahmed Madobe, the heads of the Puntland and Jubbaland states of Somalia. Both leaders were coming to Mogadishu to planned national dialogue.
In a statement, the Somali government said some members of the Madasha Mustaqbalka (Future Forum), who were expected to attend the conference, attempted to bring armed personnel and weapons into the city by air. Authorities said the purpose of the personnel and weapons was not specified, a move condemned by Jubbaland and Puntland administrations.
The government said the attempt contravened existing security resolutions and protocols regulating Aden Adde International Airport and security arrangements in Mogadishu. These rules, according to the statement, apply to senior federal officials, leaders of Federal Member States, and former national leaders.
“Security agencies and the conference organizing committee informed representatives of the Future Forum that the entry of armed personnel and weapons without prior authorization and adherence to established procedures is not permitted.” The Statement noted.
The federal government reiterated that it remains responsible for maintaining public security and said the measures in place are intended to preserve stability in the capital.
Despite the incident, authorities said preparations for the national dialogue conference will continue as planned. The government reaffirmed its invitation to the Future Forum and called on all participants to comply with agreed security arrangements to ensure a safe and conducive environment for dialogue
