Mogadishu, Thursday, April 27, 2023: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has finalized journalists’ youth reporting training that has been convened concurrently in Baidoa City, South West State and Dhuusamareeb City of Galmudug State.
The 3 -day training workshop, implemented in partnership with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) from 25th to 27th April 2023 simultaneously in Baidoa and Dhuusamareeb, has hosted eighty participants overall, comprising of journalists and youth from the targeted cities.
In his opening remarks for the training in Baidoa city, Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ, pointed out the purpose of the training is for the journalists to learn about reporting youth issues and give a balanced viewpoint professionally and ethically from different backgrounds, their perspectives, priorities and activities.
“Our intention is for the journalists and youth to deeply discuss the issues that need to be reported and for both sides to present the existing needs and challenges. There is a need to get youth and journalists cooperating and exchanging information and youth stories.” Farah Omar said.
He added that FESOJ gives youth affairs particular importance since most Somali people are youth.
Isaq Hassan, Chairperson of Baidoa district youth appreciated FESOJ and UNSOM for the idea of bringing the youth and the journalists of the community together in such type of training and the facilitators for the presentation of the significant topics during the sessions.
Abdirahman Shaati, the Chairperson of Bay regional youth, pointed out the training had the advantage of delivering knowledge about the rules of conventions, ethics of the media and how the journalists and youth can work together.
Abdikarim Mohamed Nur, speaking on behalf of the journalists, described the 3- day training with the youth as very useful.
Marian Mohamed Samaan speaking on behalf of the youth, indicated the joint training of journalists and the youth from the Baidoa community will contribute to their mutual understanding, peacebuilding and development of the country.
During the 3-day training proceedings, the participants were exposed to the main themes focusing on: News worth elements, Interview skills and vox pop, Ethical reporting and protecting sources, Conflict sensitive reporting, Youth peace, youth rights and Challenges, Reporting Youth issues, Introducing to international and African union convention on youth and Media Law.
The participants, members from youth organizations and journalists, have thanked UNSOM for the training program, which has given them a platform to thoroughly discuss the significance of addressing youth issues mutually, and have requested that such get-togethers be increased.
In collaboration with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) plans to continue conducting similar training programs at the other major regional cities of Somalia as well.
