Somali’s living in the diaspora have launched a petition seeking the revocation of the Nobel Peace Prize Award given to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed over his Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland.
In their petition, they condemned the aggressive actions of the Ethiopian Prime Minister and called upon the Nobel Peace Prize committee to revoke the accolade awarded to Abiy in 2019, citing his role in escalating conflict in the Horn of Africa.
“The immediate revocation of the Nobel Peace Prize bestowed upon Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is paramount to preserving the integrity and purpose of this esteemed accolade. The Nobel Peace Prize shouldn’t be the certificate to endorse or encourage conflicts”.
They observed that the action by the Ethiopian PM seeking control of a section of Somalia’s coastline poses substantial risk of worsening the already dire security situation at the Horn of Africa
“The region is grappling with challenges such as drought, poverty, and hunger, and such actions could potentially trigger a humanitarian crisis, leading to waves of refugees and prolonged displacement,” the petition reads in part.
They further stated that Ethiopia’s actions could present an opportunity for the Al-shabaab militants to extend its operations by compromising the Federal Government’s ongoing offensive aimed at eradicating the group and restoring peace and stability in Somalia.
“Abiy’s aggressive actions in the Horn of Africa also present an opportunity for the Al-Shabaab terrorist organization, further complicating the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia to eradicate them. The war against Al-Shabaab has seen success since the reelection of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who declared total war against this group in August 2022.”
