The Government of Djibouti is hosting a meeting today between the president of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Somaliland president Musa Bihi Abdi, to renew talks between Somalia and Somaliland after 11 years.

A statement from the Somaliland Presidential Office said that a delegation led by President Bihi arrived in Djibouti to meet with the President of Somalia.

“A delegation led by the President of the Republic of Somaliland, HE. Muse Bihi Abdi went on a working trip to the Republic of Djibouti. The purpose of this official trip is to continue the talks between Somaliland and Somalia, which will start at the Presidential level,” reads the statement from the Somaliland Presidential Office.

He will be accompanied by the Ministers of the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Saad Ali Shire, National Planning and Development, Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Diriye (Toorno), Internal Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, Education and Science, Mr. Ahmed Adan Buxane, and the Special Envoy of Somaliland in charge of Somaliland-Somalia dialogue Mrs. Edna Adan Ismail.

“President Hassan’s trip is aimed at resuming talks between the Federal Government of Somalia and Somalia and solving the conflict in the country”, Minister of Information, Daud Aweis said in a statement.

He added that Somalia’s Interior Minister, Ahmed Mo’alim Fiqi, Minister of Commerce, Jabril Abdirashid and his President’s Envoy for the talks with Somaliland, Abdikarim Hussein Guled are accompanying the President. ‘Our sisterly country Djibouti is hosting the talks’, he said.

Reliable sources revealed that the presidents will discuss a wide range of issues, including debt relief, the management of national projects, resource allocation, crises, and the recent tensions in the Red Sea.

Somaliland, this time, will go to the discussion table without the inclusion of SSC Khatumo, and it is expected that the presidents will discuss amicable solutions to the conflicts in the Sool region.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, when he was re-elected in May 2022, appointed an envoy in charge of Somaliland affairs to continue to find a solution to this issue that has been dragging on for many years.

Somaliland has been striving to get international recognition for more than 30 years, and it has maintained peace and security compared to other regions of Somalia.

It has been 11 years since the Transitional Government of Somalia and Somaliland had the first dialogue after the declaration of independence of Somaliland, which is now 32 years since the collapse of the Somali government in 1991.
