PRESS RELEASE
(For Immediate Release)
January 28, 2017– Britain’s Secretary of State for International Development, the Rt Hon Priti Patel travelled to Mogadishu today (28th Jan 2016) where she re-affirmed the importance of the UK’s partnership with Somalia and commitment to AMISOM.
During her trip, Minister Patel met the Deputy AU Special Representative for Somalia, Lydia Wanyoto, AMISOM Force Commander Lieutenant General Soubagleh and AMISOM Deputy Police Commissioner Christine Alalo, to discuss efforts to improve Somalia’s prospects for peace and security ahead of the Somalia Conference in London in May.
During the meeting, Minister Patel commended the continuing efforts and sacrifices made by AMISOM and their troops, and highlighted the important role AMISOM to continue to play in enabling Somalia to take responsibility for its security.
Whilst in Mogadishu, the Minister announced that the UK government will provide £10 million additional humanitarian funding to address immediate needs following deteriorating drought conditions in Somalia. This support will be delivered through three UN agencies (WFP, UNICEF, FAO) and will go into providing food security, supporting nutrition and basic health services. This is expected to provide a significant boost for those affected by the drought.
Speaking at the end of the visit, The Secretary of State said:
“AMISOM together with UK military support are playing a crucial role in helping to deliver a stable, prosperous and secure Somalia.
“Great progress towards peace has been made, but significant challenges remain.
“That’s why Global Britain is bringing the international community together in London to agree future support to Somalia and ensure the country’s future stability.”
