Mogadishu, 23 September 2016 (Villa Somalia)— HE Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia has expressed his thankfulness to Her Excellency Theresa May, the Prime Minister of the UK for raising the plight of Somalia and galvanizing international efforts towards Somalia at the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
“Her Excellency Theresa May, has really shown us her country’s leadership and commitment towards Somalia during her speech at the UN General Assembly. Somalia and UK have a very special relationship and we cannot thank enough for everything, such as security, development, political, humanitarian, social and welcoming Somali refugees, who later on integrated and became UK citizens. Everyone knows that these Britons of Somali origin are making valuable contributions to UK and Somalia,” said the President.
The President hinted that the solidarity and generosity of the UK to Somalia was there for long.
“During his tenure the former UK PM David Cameron took a personal leadership as he convened a number of Somalia supporting conferences in London, and has indeed succeeded in galvanizing international community’s efforts towards Somalia. An example of this was the New Deal meeting in Brussels and other international conferences on Somalia’’.
In her speech at the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly, the UK Prime Minister said “We have shown how we can work together to reduce the threat from international terrorism by preventing conflict and instability from developing. For example, through our Permanent Membership of the Security Council, Britain has played a leading role in the fight against Al Shabab in Somalia. Since 2010, with huge support from across the region, and critically the commitment of Somalis themselves, Al Shabab has been driven from all the major cities it used to control. Somalia is much honored to have UK, a genuine partner at international forums’’.
The UK PM has also called for an international conference on Somalia in 2017 to maintain the vital momentum that the country is registering.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has concluded his appreciation to the UK PM by saying that her speech the UNGA has touched every Somali individual, and that Somalia is committed to move forward with the support of the international community, like the UK and others.
